Five years ago, SHS began participating in an ambitious program called “Guess Who’s Coming to Shabbas?™” (GWCTS)––the goal of this program is to create opportunities for members (and prospective members) to celebrate Shabbat in other members’ homes. Last spring over 60 families attended GWCTS Friday night dinners, Saturday Shabbat luncheons, and/or Saturday night Havdalah events. This year, because we are fortunate to have such a full calendar of events, our sixth GWCTS will be held on only one Friday night––on December 8.
So how does it work? On Friday night, December 8, regular Shabbat services at SHS will be cancelled, and synagogue members will be encouraged to attend a dinner at a host families’ home. As always, we encourage hosts to keep it simple–– meals can be served buffet-style or sit down, barbecue or pizza. Cook by yourself or join a friend and host a meal together––it all works. Hosts can even invite guests to bring a dish or bottle of wine. The camaraderie is what’s important! All hosts will receive tote bags filled with information about celebrating Shabbat at home, including an explanation of traditions along with all of the basic prayers and songs.
Would you like to be a host? A co-host? Or, would you rather be a guest?
If you’d like to participate in GWCTS, please contact Bonny Hohenberger at firstname.lastname@example.org or 267.974.6268 as soon as possible. The sooner we accumulate our lists of hosts and guests, the better we can plan for the event (we try to place members in homes which are geographically convenient and age compatible). Hosts may invite their synagogue friends, but the emphasis is on meeting new or new-to-you members.
Don’t miss out on the fun. Looking forward to hearing from you!
