The three towering thinkers/theologians/religious leaders of the last century in America were Mordecai Kaplan, Joseph Soloveitchik, and Abraham Joshua Heschel. Heschel embodied the cultivation of a deep inner spiritual life in tandem with a passionate commitment to social justice. He is a rabbi for our times. A student of Martin Buber and close friend of Martin Luther King, Heschel did more than strike a balance––his passionate commitment to God and humanity is exemplified in his statement, “A prophet is a person who holds God and men in one thought at one time, at all times.” This statement was part of the keynote address—a speech we will study––during a conference on religion and race in 1963.
