Join us in the Sanctuary on Sunday, June 25, at 7 PM, to experience Together in Struggle (Ale Tsuzamen in Kamf), a new composition and community collaboration by Klezmer musician and composer Dan Blacksberg. The composition is a musical response to the social justice work of Society Hill Synagogue and other congregations who have joined forces with POWER.
After speaking with members of the SHS leadership and the leaders of other congregations associated with POWER and attending meetings and protests, Dan has identified specific issues central to SHS’s work in the struggle for justice and equal rights. With this foundation of information, Dan gathered Yiddish texts and songs that represent these issues at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in New York and the Robert and Molly Freedman Jewish Sound Archive at the University of Pennsylvania. We, at SHS, will be honored to hear how he used this material to create a new long-form composition, Together in Struggle (Ale Tsuzamen in Kamf).
This new piece, based on Yiddish and Klezmer music, as well as Dan’s own repertoire of contemporary music, will be presented as a “Works-in-Progress” concert. An ensemble of expert Jewish and creative music performers from Philadelphia and New York will play the music in both its original and recomposed forms to show how songs and texts can be transformed into new compositions. Dan would also like to share his research and creative process with the SHS community during an afternoon talk. Participants will be encouraged to give feedback with their own thoughts and stories about the process and the music. Further details will follow.
