Do you ever feel that you don’t know enough about Judaism? Maybe you became a Bar or Bat Mitzvah when you were young but you are still grappling with your spiritual heritage as an adult. Nuts & Bolts & Beyond, subtitled “A (Re)Introduction to Judaism,” an acclaimed 9-month class, is designed not just for those with little or no Jewish background but also for those with a Hebrew school background but no adult-level Jewish background.
How do you read the Bible as an adult? If God didn’t create the world in six days, is the Torah merely an important cultural artifact but no longer of spiritual significance? What if you don’t believe in the God of your childhood, but you have a spiritual sense. Is there a Jewish home for that spiritual sense? How do you contend with the idea of commandments if deep inside you don’t really believe in a commander?
This course will provide an overview of Jewish rituals and customs, Shabbat and holiday celebrations, and historical events. We will also have engaging discussions about anti-Semitism, the Holocaust, and Israel.
