This six-session course is an introduction to the Ashkenazi system for leyning (chanting) Torah. Participants will gain initial skills to become independent Torah leyners. We will cover the basics of Torah trope (the musical system for chanting Torah): symbols, musical patterns, and how they interact with the words. We will get comfortable with the humash and tikkun and learn a little of the historical context in which trope developed. Adult B’nei Mitzvah students will take these skills into the second semester class in preparation for their B’nei Mitzvah ceremony and beyond. Other students will work toward a final project for the class and be encouraged to continue leyning in the Society Hill Synagogue community.
